Be on Purpose

Has a piece of literature influenced who you are today?

One of the books that influenced me early in my leadership was Re-inventing the Corporation, by John Naisbitt and Patricia Aberdeen. In it, the authors emphasize the importance of human capital. It wasn’t a question of being nice to people. It was more a recognition that human beings will make or break a company.

The authors spoke on vision first, followed by what they called alignment. The excerpts below are important reminders when you take over any leadership assignment:

“Intellectual strategies alone will not motivate people. Only a company with a real mission or sense of purpose that comes out of an intuitive or spiritual dimension will capture people’s hearts. And you must have people’s hearts to inspire the hard work required to realize a vision.

“But vision is practical as well as mystical: It is easier to get from point A to point B if you know where point B is and how to recognize it when you have arrived. Without a goal, neither companies nor people get very far. But when people have a vision, they are motivated to make it a reality.

“Alignment transforms a leader’s vision into a shared corporate vision…When you identify with your company’s purpose, when you experience ownership in a shared vision, you find yourself doing your life’s work instead of just doing time.”

These words helped form the basis of my thinking about leadership and leading people. They resonated with me –my background, my experience, and my personal and professional values. They were fundamental to how I began to lead the organization I served, and they will serve you equally well today.

Lead well!

“I needed help orchestrating a succession plan for our business. I had heard that Bill Boyajian specialized in assisting owners to transition their business to the next generation. He knows how to bridge the generation gap and deliver what each needs to hear. I would recommend Bill to any business owner who needs advice on succession planning from a trusted outside professional.”

"Our family needed some guidance on business transition and succession planning. We asked Bill Boyajian to help us because we knew we could trust him to tell us what we needed to hear. Bill became a valuable resource for our company and our entire family. He has the ability to meet each of us where we’re at and it has served us very well."

“We needed a plan to transition our business to a non-family member and we asked Bill Boyajian to help us. His experience in the area has really paid off, but we didn’t expect the added value of putting us together with a financial planner who helped organize our retirement needs. We now have the fundamentals to transition our business successfully, and we have Bill to thank for it.”
