Monitoring Progress
February 13th, 2012
by Bill Boyajian

There are several key elements you need to consider when monitoring the progress of any new hire, but especially a leader or manager. And the higher the level, the more important the monitoring, because there is so much more at stake. Here are five rules I recommend:

Rule 1. Help the person you hire to become successful, but help without getting in the way. At a certain point, it is possible to give too much advice. But I don’t think it’s possible to give too much support and encouragement.

Rule 2. Set direction and look for action quickly. Any good leader will be assertive and want to prove herself or himself. If you don’t see the right actions within the “grace period” you’ve set, get involved in the details right away.

Rule 3. Listen to what subordinates say without yielding your support. If you hear praise, let the person know it and be generous with your own. If there are complaints, let the person know this, too. Provide some advice and watch how he or she handles it. If problems persist, you may have put the wrong person in charge.

Rule 4. Know that you can’t do it for them. You need the right people to help take you where you want to go. Imply, advise, make suggestions, and sometimes persuade, but always let them know they are in charge. The final decisions are their call.

Rule 5. Let the person know that their success, in line with your corporate success, is your ultimate goal. You want them to succeed. You’ll look good, they’ll look good, and everyone will benefit.

“I needed help orchestrating a succession plan for our business. I had heard that Bill Boyajian specialized in assisting owners to transition their business to the next generation. He knows how to bridge the generation gap and deliver what each needs to hear. I would recommend Bill to any business owner who needs advice on succession planning from a trusted outside professional.”

"Our family needed some guidance on business transition and succession planning. We asked Bill Boyajian to help us because we knew we could trust him to tell us what we needed to hear. Bill became a valuable resource for our company and our entire family. He has the ability to meet each of us where we’re at and it has served us very well."

“We needed a plan to transition our business to a non-family member and we asked Bill Boyajian to help us. His experience in the area has really paid off, but we didn’t expect the added value of putting us together with a financial planner who helped organize our retirement needs. We now have the fundamentals to transition our business successfully, and we have Bill to thank for it.”
