Peter Drucker’s Five Key Questions

The late Peter Drucker’s five key questions for non-profit organizations apply equally well to most any business:

•  What is your mission?

•  Who is your customer?

•  What does your customer value?

•  What are your desired results?

•  What is your plan?

Without a mission (or purpose) for existence, no one – especially those inside your organization or business – will know why you exist. Clearly define your mission in as concise a way as possible. Seven to ten words should do it.

Next, clearly define who your customer is. It may well be that your current customer is not who you want your future customer to be.

What your customers’ value will direct you to how to service them or what products they want to buy. You must determine their wants and needs, and what they value the most.

Next, challenge yourself to determine your desired, measurable results. What gets measured gets done. What isn’t measurable remains a mystery.

Finally, formulate a plan of action that provides a roadmap to success. Do this yourself, or with your team. And if you need help, retain whatever assistance you may need.
