Magic Johnson’s Magic Formula

At the recent AGS Conclave in San Diego, Magic Johnson was the opening Keynote Speaker.  Not surprisingly, he was MAGIC!

• “It’s not whether you can be successful, it’s how many people you can help make successful.”

• “Are you still bringing the fire to your business every day?”

• “Are you ready for change?  Can you adapt and adjust?”

• “Can you move fast, but make sure that your brand is not diluted?”

• “You’re in business to win, but you need to do things the right way!”

• “There are no shortcuts to being successful.  Believe in over-delivering.”

• “It’s good when people tell you that you can’t do something.”

• “If you don’t dream it, you can’t achieve it.  Commitment to what you do is vital.”

These are the principles that Magic shared, and they have helped him transition from basketball star (and the ultimate team player) to an extraordinarily successful businessman.  The competitive spirit that made him a Hall of Famer and arguably the most charismatic leader in NBA history is the very same passion that makes him what he is today: a global brand name, yet the epitome of warmth, kindness, and truth.

We can all learn from Magic Johnson.  The real key is, will we?

The following excerpt is taken from Bill’s Book, Developing the Mind of a Leader….

Teamwork is Everything

“The greatest thing about the playing career of the Los Angeles Lakers’ Magic Johnson was not his individual talent on a basketball court — though it was outstanding — but what he could do for a team. He made everyone better, and that became the true measure of his greatness and his leadership.

At six feet and nine inches, Johnson was tall for a point guard in the National Basketball Association. He could dribble, pass, penetrate, score, and rebound. But he united his Lakers team and inspired his teammates through his defense, his work ethic, and his attitude on and off the court. When it came down to the fourth quarter in a tight game, he simply said, “It’s winning time.” That was enough.

Leadership is not what you can do for yourself. It’s what you can do for — and through — others. It’s not about how good you are. It’s about how good you can make others. Charismatic leaders like Magic Johnson can unite people and lead them to victory. They encourage, motivate, and lift people to heights they would not attain on their own. It is not enough for such leaders to excel as individuals. They are driven to help others achieve greatness, even at the expense of their own heroics. That is the essence of leadership. That’s what you strive for”.

Here are a few Business & Life Tips to think about…..

Business Tips:

  • When you try to do something out of the ordinary, people will claim that it’s unrealistic. But that’s what makes your idea so special.
  • Remember, the more difficult the decision you make in business, the more careful the implementation plan must be to carry it out.
  • Some leaders struggle to see themselves as being in service to those they lead. Service emanates from self-confidence. Think about it.

Life Tips:

  • You are not defined by the challenges you have faced, but rather by how you handled them.
  • Decide what real joy means to you. Then measure your success by how close you get to it.
  • You have one life to live, so make the most of it. Redeem your time, make good choices, do good to others. That’s the way to live.

“I needed help orchestrating a succession plan for our business. I had heard that Bill Boyajian specialized in assisting owners to transition their business to the next generation. He knows how to bridge the generation gap and deliver what each needs to hear. I would recommend Bill to any business owner who needs advice on succession planning from a trusted outside professional.”

"Our family needed some guidance on business transition and succession planning. We asked Bill Boyajian to help us because we knew we could trust him to tell us what we needed to hear. Bill became a valuable resource for our company and our entire family. He has the ability to meet each of us where we’re at and it has served us very well."

“We needed a plan to transition our business to a non-family member and we asked Bill Boyajian to help us. His experience in the area has really paid off, but we didn’t expect the added value of putting us together with a financial planner who helped organize our retirement needs. We now have the fundamentals to transition our business successfully, and we have Bill to thank for it.”
