Want a Quick Lesson on How to Counsel an Employee in Need of Some Instruction?

Here’s a five-step formula that works:

1. Be direct and fair in your remarks. Don’t bully people, and don’t talk around the issue. Be clear, and above all, be honest.

2. Deliver a sincere and genuine message. Let your employee know that you care, and that you want the very best for him.

3. Don’t overcomplicate things. What you have to say is important, but it isn’t rocket science. Keep it simple.

4. Address any misbehavior without attacking the person. This isn’t a personal thing. The focus is to improve performance, not to rake someone over the coals.

5. Conclude by showing your support, and your belief in the individual. Let her know she’s valued. End on a positive. It never hurts.
