I’ve never been a video game player or a social media buff, but I like my sports and the time I take to escape from the hectic pace of business and life. Some would say that near-mindless activities are a waste of time, but we all need a certain measure of “down time” to recoup and refresh. It’s part of what makes us more effective when we have our “game face” on and need to get things done. But down time doesn’t mean making a habit of wasting time or becoming excessive with it. Life and business aren’t a sprint as much as they are a marathon. There are seasons in business and life where focus, time, and attention are critical to success, but even then, a portion of time must be devoted to relaxation and recuperation. And that’s where down time comes in. So the next time you think that you (or others) are wasting life by enjoying some reasonable down time, remember that you and others need this time be all you can be when you really need to be.
