Do You Take Responsibility For Your Actions?
December 8th, 2011
by Bill Boyajian

Are you brave enough to take the responsibility for your actions?

Responsibility, stated simply, is being accountable for what is within your power to control. Learn to deal with things you can control. Do that well, and you’ll be better able to deal with things outside your control.

We hear it said that we are responsible for our own actions. If we get angry, we are responsible. If we make a mistake, we are responsible. If we achieve something great, we are responsible. Our human nature likes to take credit for our successes but downplay our failures. To have the mind of a leader, you need to make a habit of taking full responsibility for any outcome, good or bad.

James, one of my directors years ago, was a brilliant, tough, and resourceful man. He was given major tasks within the organization and performed them well. I liked his ability to get things done, but the quality I liked the most was his willingness to take responsibility for his actions, including his occasional mistakes. When something went wrong, James shouldered the responsibility, for himself and for his people. He had courage, and I appreciated that.

James knew that a leader with confidence and integrity doesn’t dodge the occasional problem, challenge, or failure that comes with responsibility. He was willing to suck it up and say, boldly, “I made a mistake” or “It was my responsibility” or “I blew it.” James also knew that accepting responsibility head on– especially for a problem– would diffuse the situation sooner and allow things to move along.

Responsible behavior is critical for leaders. It must be encouraged, valued, and reinforced from the top down in any business or organization. Responsibility that is not reinforced begins to fade, and ultimately has a devastating effect on your leadership. Responsibility is something you take, while respect and authority are things you earn.

“I needed help orchestrating a succession plan for our business. I had heard that Bill Boyajian specialized in assisting owners to transition their business to the next generation. He knows how to bridge the generation gap and deliver what each needs to hear. I would recommend Bill to any business owner who needs advice on succession planning from a trusted outside professional.”

"Our family needed some guidance on business transition and succession planning. We asked Bill Boyajian to help us because we knew we could trust him to tell us what we needed to hear. Bill became a valuable resource for our company and our entire family. He has the ability to meet each of us where we’re at and it has served us very well."

“We needed a plan to transition our business to a non-family member and we asked Bill Boyajian to help us. His experience in the area has really paid off, but we didn’t expect the added value of putting us together with a financial planner who helped organize our retirement needs. We now have the fundamentals to transition our business successfully, and we have Bill to thank for it.”
