The climate and culture of any firm or organization is set by its leader and reinforced by its management structure. The two should always be in sync. People must be treated with respect, dignity, and understanding. Do this well, and you’re on the way to leading effectively. You’ll also have fewer morale problems, and it will be easier to recruit and retain high-quality people. Realize, too, the way you treat customers speaks volumes to staff about how you will treat them. Too often, people who reach leadership positions are so arrogant or insecure as to treat people with a lack of respect. They aren’t generous with praise (though they love it for themselves). They don’t write notes of appreciation any more than they give public praise. Most people want to do a good job. Learn to give people credit for that and for their intelligence. Treat people as adults and professionals. Give them the benefit of the doubt until they prove you wrong. Empower them and see how they respond. Most of all, treat them with respect.
