How to Hire and Retain Good People
September 26th, 2021
by Bill Boyajian

Recruiting and retaining great staff has always been challenging, but the pandemic has made it even harder. Whether caused by career shifts, stimulus money, or simply by complacency, it is an issue that business owners and managers face today.

Here are some thoughts and actions that may help:

  • Always be looking. Search your community for great customer service. When you find it, impress people with what you do and the potential of working with you.
  • Incentivize your current staff to recruit. Offer a finder’s fee or other recognition. It doesn’t have to be money. Make your team part of the recruitment process.
  • Use respected outside recruiting sources. Evaluate your past successes (or failures). Constantly research and innovate.
  • Don’t stand still. Recruit before you know you need replacements. Recruiting is an ongoing job.
  • Consider a seasoned recruiting firm. Let them get to know you and your needs. Once they have it down, they become a trusted resource for many different positions.
  • Build and maintain a great workplace culture. Owners tend to neglect this. Culture trumps everything else for recruiting and retention.
  • Offer continuous education and training. Make it lead to something special, be it an award, a promotion, or even a financial reward.
  • Hire for long-term talent. Focus on what you don’t already have and what you will need in the future.

Best wishes in your hiring and retention!

“I needed help orchestrating a succession plan for our business. I had heard that Bill Boyajian specialized in assisting owners to transition their business to the next generation. He knows how to bridge the generation gap and deliver what each needs to hear. I would recommend Bill to any business owner who needs advice on succession planning from a trusted outside professional.”

"Our family needed some guidance on business transition and succession planning. We asked Bill Boyajian to help us because we knew we could trust him to tell us what we needed to hear. Bill became a valuable resource for our company and our entire family. He has the ability to meet each of us where we’re at and it has served us very well."

“We needed a plan to transition our business to a non-family member and we asked Bill Boyajian to help us. His experience in the area has really paid off, but we didn’t expect the added value of putting us together with a financial planner who helped organize our retirement needs. We now have the fundamentals to transition our business successfully, and we have Bill to thank for it.”
