Judging Others
September 10th, 2023
by Bill Boyajian

One of the problems we encounter with working relationships is how we tend to judge co-workers. You might say we shouldn’t judge – that it’s a bad habit we should discard. Yet we all do it.

Unfortunately, we judge ourselves differently than we judge others. We judge ourselves based on our intentions, whereas we judge others by their actions. This unintentional bias is the reason we often have a more elevated view of ourselves than others might have of us. After all, if things don’t work out for us as we had planned, at least we know our intentions were good.

Yet when other mess up, we don’t have access to their intentions. So when things go wrong, we judge the outcome by what happened – that is, the results. Their intentions might have been good – as ours often are – but we’ll never really know unless we give them the benefit of the doubt.

Not every working relationship is going to be terrific, but every working relationship can be better. And better is what we should strive for. It’s up to us to make things better by giving a little grace to the person working next to us. If that seems impossible or unreasonable, you might want to take a deeper look at yourself.

“I needed help orchestrating a succession plan for our business. I had heard that Bill Boyajian specialized in assisting owners to transition their business to the next generation. He knows how to bridge the generation gap and deliver what each needs to hear. I would recommend Bill to any business owner who needs advice on succession planning from a trusted outside professional.”

"Our family needed some guidance on business transition and succession planning. We asked Bill Boyajian to help us because we knew we could trust him to tell us what we needed to hear. Bill became a valuable resource for our company and our entire family. He has the ability to meet each of us where we’re at and it has served us very well."

“We needed a plan to transition our business to a non-family member and we asked Bill Boyajian to help us. His experience in the area has really paid off, but we didn’t expect the added value of putting us together with a financial planner who helped organize our retirement needs. We now have the fundamentals to transition our business successfully, and we have Bill to thank for it.”
