Responsibility and Authority
July 31st, 2020
by Bill Boyajian

If you want to lead, you have to show an innate ability to take responsibility. It’s responsible to see something that needs to be done and just do it. It’s responsible to comply with duties and even demands from someone in authority. It’s responsible to seek a higher call and do for others what they may not be able to do for themselves.

Authority is very different. If you seek authority, you need to earn respect by having demonstrated a capacity to be responsible. A title won’t do it. Being the son or daughter of the owner won’t do it. Taking command of something without developing followership won’t do it. With authority comes the responsibility of being accountable for the actions of others whether you can control them or not.

Leadership isn’t for everyone. It’s only for those who are willing to accept the results of responsibility well beyond what they are individually responsible for. Think about this before you try to seek authority. All of us can see needs that cross our path and take responsibility for them. It doesn’t require much. Just a desire to do the right thing at the right time. If you do this, soon you’ll find yourself leading, and with authority.

“I needed help orchestrating a succession plan for our business. I had heard that Bill Boyajian specialized in assisting owners to transition their business to the next generation. He knows how to bridge the generation gap and deliver what each needs to hear. I would recommend Bill to any business owner who needs advice on succession planning from a trusted outside professional.”

"Our family needed some guidance on business transition and succession planning. We asked Bill Boyajian to help us because we knew we could trust him to tell us what we needed to hear. Bill became a valuable resource for our company and our entire family. He has the ability to meet each of us where we’re at and it has served us very well."

“We needed a plan to transition our business to a non-family member and we asked Bill Boyajian to help us. His experience in the area has really paid off, but we didn’t expect the added value of putting us together with a financial planner who helped organize our retirement needs. We now have the fundamentals to transition our business successfully, and we have Bill to thank for it.”
