Leaders and business owners hope their succession plans will work, but hope is not a good strategy. This is exactly why transition plans and exit strategies don’t get done by controlling owners. The challenge of the inevitable is too painful to contemplate, so the decision-making process becomes too arduous to tackle. Nothing gets done until it’s too late. Even then, it gets done by someone other than the owner. Imagine working your whole life to build something great, but not being around to see it carry on.
