Work On Your Business, Not Just In It

The trouble with so many businesspeople is that they spend all their time working in their business, not on their business.  They get caught up in the weeds – the daily operational grind – and forget about the big picture.  They may try to evaluate things at the end of a calendar year, but that isn’t enough.

If you’re in business, you need to work your plan and evaluate how you are doing on at least a quarterly basis, if not monthly.  Too often people wait for a new year to start something, change things, or assess progress toward stated goals.  But that isn’t enough.

You need to start a new 12-month rolling year each month to really understand your business and how you’re tracking.   In a 12-month rolling year, seasonality is never an issue.  You are comparing numbers and success month by month because that keeps you focused on your business, not mired in the details of your business.

Use this message to step back from your day to day involvement and ask how you can look at your business with a big picture view.  Only then will you be able to work on your business instead of in it all the time.

Here are a few Business & Life Tips to think about….

Business Tips:

  • To get to a strategic view, you must first get away from the day-to-day operations. Seek time away to begin a new strategy.
  • Multiple sites in business yield growth and scale. But this requires more frequent communication, and better organization and structure.
  • Your mind clears when you take time to think. But you can’t think when you’re mired in the details of your business.

Life Tips:

  • If you want to lead people, bring them together under a common cause, develop a plan to achieve it, and execute on your plan.
  • To tackle a huge undertaking, break it down into smaller segments; reaching each mini- milestone helps to achieve the major goal.
  • What got you to where you are today may not take you to where you next want to go. Assess what you need and go for it.

“I needed help orchestrating a succession plan for our business. I had heard that Bill Boyajian specialized in assisting owners to transition their business to the next generation. He knows how to bridge the generation gap and deliver what each needs to hear. I would recommend Bill to any business owner who needs advice on succession planning from a trusted outside professional.”

"Our family needed some guidance on business transition and succession planning. We asked Bill Boyajian to help us because we knew we could trust him to tell us what we needed to hear. Bill became a valuable resource for our company and our entire family. He has the ability to meet each of us where we’re at and it has served us very well."

“We needed a plan to transition our business to a non-family member and we asked Bill Boyajian to help us. His experience in the area has really paid off, but we didn’t expect the added value of putting us together with a financial planner who helped organize our retirement needs. We now have the fundamentals to transition our business successfully, and we have Bill to thank for it.”
