Team Builders

If you like to build and nurture teams, chances are you prefer to work with someone else’s idea once there is a basic model and a clear goal in play. Team Builders are classic “people leaders” who believe in consensus planning and love to put people together toward a common, agreed-upon objective.

Team builders are great at empowering and encouraging others, and don’t get hung up on who’s idea they are building toward. They are more concerned about focusing on the task at hand, making sure that everyone is contributing in their area of greatest strength.

Look for team builders among your staff. They engender loyal followers who see in their leader a balance of inspiration and encouragement. They are steady, predictable, and flexible, able to handle the ups and downs of business and life much better than most.

So if you want a leader who is motivating, well-liked and respected, and who gives people the freedom to operate, find yourself a team builder. If you are one, bravo. Keep leading. People will follow.

How’s Your Boss Doing?

Maybe a better question is, “How are YOU doing with your boss?

I don’t like the term “boss.” So let’s substitute it with supervisor, manager, owner, or any term that refers to the person you report to. If you are the owner or ultimate authority, fine. Just listen in.

Most people want to work for people who know where they’re headed, and also how to get there. They want to work for people who are collaborative and make them feel part of a team. Employees don’t want to be taken for granted. They want to be part of something bigger than themselves that achieves success.

So if you are in charge, rally people around you with a team-builder mentality. If you are a support person, give your manager the very best effort you can. They deserve your support, and you deserve the very best of their leadership.

 

Here are a few Business & Life Tips to think about…..

Business Tips:

  • The beauty of leading is to subtly point out salient issues that others might be missing in a project or planning process.
  • It’s a bit counter-intuitive, but if you want to reap more than what you’re paid at work, simply do more than what you’re paid for.
  • Staying in the middle is a safe place to be, but it won’t get you where you want to go. Instead, get on the edge of something new.

Life Tips:

  • We certainly enjoy our own successes, but are we equally happy for others’ success? That’s the way we experience real joy.
  • How’s your emotional bank account, the one that stores up reserves of goodwill so when you mess up, your mistakes are covered?
  • Only a fool fails to listen to wise counsel. Learning to be open to advice is a virtue you should embrace and nurture.
